What Exactly Is Yoga?

Yoga is originally a sanskrit word which gives a meaning 'Union' or 'Join' or 'Conjunction'. How Yoga had been so popular word? Is Yoga understood correctly by every one? What is taught in many Yoga classes is correct? I am writing this post because I had recently attended many Yoga classes and what was taught there was not giving the exact meaning to the word 'Yoga'. The meaning of Yoga was misunderstood by many of those classes and been misconcepted in the classes.

Yoga is a 'Prakriya' followed and following by saints of india called 'Yogis'. 'Prakriya' does give a meaning 'Practice'. Who ever practices 'Yoga' are called 'Yogis'. Yogis believe that every human being is an 'Atma' which is the part of 'Paramatma'(which means supreme power). Human body is unaware of this truth due to disturbances caused with flow of thoughts. One can be conscious of this truth when these flows of thoughts can be nulled. 'Yoga' is a process practiced to achieve the state of mind undisturbed with flow of thoughts and unite 'Atma' with 'Paramatma'.

Different methods of Yogas are followed by yogis like Kriya Yoga, Bakti Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Gnana Yoga and many other Yoga methods are in practice. But the ultimate goal of each and every Yoga is the same that is to unite 'Atma' in 'Paramatma' which is possible only by controlling flow of thoughts. To achieve this state of mind Yogis used to practice 'Asanas' which are the postures that keep their physical and mental bodies fit and have the control over their mind. Several hundreds of 'Asanas' were followed by yogis which look like excercises done for physical fitness.

Yogis used to practice these 'Asanas' to achieve the successful 'Yoga'(Union) by keeping themselves undisturbed by phisical and mental illness and other disturbances. But in modern days the word 'Yoga' is misconcepted and is understood as exercises practiced to achieve physical and mental fitness only. The 'Asanas' only were understood as Yoga and are practiced only to get releived from various stresses and disorders in the body.

If the 'Yoga' is understood properly and achieve that, you get a lot of joy, lot of thrill, lot of happy and much more in undefined amount. Afterall Yoga life is a happy life. A saint who achieved Yoga says you get through Yoga a happiness that is more than a trillion times of thrill and happiness that you get after sex. I had done enough research to understand the word 'Yoga' and my efforts were very little only. But my is giving the above meaning only for Yoga.

If you feel that i had misrepresented Yoga here you always have right to discuss over the issue through comments. I never mind to take the nagatives also with very possitive attitude. Feel free to leave the comments.

You are right. Yoga is misunderstood by many people. yogasanas are being treated as yoga and those asanas are being practiced as yoga. What are being taught in many yoga classes today are just yogasanas but not yoga.

Yoga has been given a modern culture. New generations will definitely loose the quality in learning yoga.
